September has Arrived
September. The other first month. January begins the calendar year and July begins the fiscal year. But September begins the school year and doesn’t that really define our calendar? Vacation is over and it’s time to get back to school or work or church. As we begin the new church year, we have much to look forward to. Our social justice calendar is going to be full of activities. Some encompass the entire year like our ESL program which will be expanding this year. Others are one shot events like our support of the Holiday Coalition program. We will be including intergenerational activities, too; your whole family can work together on Stream Monitoring or in our expanded ESL program. Find a project or two that fit your interests and time availability.
We’ll be spreading out into the space next door, hopefully in January. There will be plenty of work to do to get ready for the move and to actually make the move. Watch for the announcements requesting your help as we use this opportunity to get rid of things we don’t need anymore and replace things that are beyond their useful life. I’m looking forward to a busy, fun time as we stretch and fit into the new space.
There will be new adult RE classes offered this year. I’ve had a sneak preview of the offerings and already I’m struggling to decide which ones to take. I want to take them all! Classes will include ‘Contemporary Bible Study’, ‘Soul Work – An exploration of Race, Theology, and Justice’, and ‘Building Your Own Theology’.
Social activities that will continue next year include the book club, ballroom dancing, and the fabric/crafts group. These are great ways to enjoy your free time and get to know other UUS’ers at the same time.
I haven’t even mentioned small groups yet. Our small group ministry program includes Covenant Groups, the Women’s Earth Based Spirituality Group, the Men’s Group, and the Elder Care Support Group. Each of these groups meets monthly and each offers an opportunity to expand your own horizons and sense of spirituality in the days between Sunday services. And I can’t end this list without talking about music: choir, jazz group, rock band. Need I say more?
We are growing in membership and program offerings. You can see that there are more activities offered than you can fit into your schedule. Part of me views this with frustration; I want to be able to participate in so many of the activities we offer. But really, isn’t it exciting that we are able to offer so much? When our program offerings are published, you will want to get out your calendars and sharpen your pencils to take advantage of as many opportunities as you can. UUS awaits you!
